What happens when a painting doesn’t have to look like anything?
In this seven-week class, you’ll explore abstract painting through color, shape, line, texture, and the pleasure of trying something new. Rather than working toward a recognizable image, you’ll learn to pay attention to what’s happening on the surface—and decide what the painting needs next.
We’ll start with approachable exercises that take the pressure out of facing a blank canvas. You’ll experiment with color relationships, layering, transparency, expressive marks, and different ways of bringing a composition together.
Working primarily with acrylic and watercolor, you’ll discover what each material can do: bold shapes and textured surfaces, loose marks and transparent washes. We’ll also look at how abstract artists use repetition, contrast, balance, movement, and negative space to build paintings that feel intentional—even when the process takes an unexpected turn.
Projects will give you a place to begin, but you won’t be expected to make the same painting as everyone else. You’ll have room to follow your ideas, change course, take risks, and discover what interests you.
No drawing or painting experience is needed. If you’ve painted before, this is also a chance to loosen up and move beyond familiar ways of working.
You don’t need to know what the finished painting will look like before you begin. Start with a color, a shape, or a mark—and see where it takes you.
