Beginner Watercolor

Ages 7–10

Discover what watercolor can do!

In this beginner-friendly class, young artists will learn the foundations of watercolor painting while experimenting with color, water, and a variety of painting techniques. Students will learn how to control their brushes, mix colors, create different values, and use water to create everything from crisp details to soft washes and flowing effects.

Each week introduces new techniques and gives students a chance to use those skills in a finished painting. Projects may include landscapes, animals, plants, still life, and other subjects while exploring techniques such as wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, layering, blending, washes, texture, and watercolor resist.

Students will learn that watercolor doesn't always behave exactly as expected—and that's part of what makes it exciting. The class encourages experimentation while helping students develop the skills and confidence to make their own creative decisions.
