What would happen if you crossed a dragon with an octopus? What does a monster that lives underground look like? Does your creature have wings, scales, horns—or something no one has ever seen before?
In this 7-week class, young artists will use their imaginations to invent, draw, paint, and build creatures of their own. From dragons and monsters to strange animals and completely new species, each week brings a different fantasy-art challenge.
Students will explore drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and mixed media while learning real art skills along the way. We'll experiment with shape, texture, color, proportion, pattern, and details to figure out what makes a creature look fierce, funny, mysterious, magical—or just plain weird.
Students won't simply copy a teacher's drawing. They'll learn how artists develop an idea from an initial sketch into an original character, making decisions about where their creature lives, how it moves, what it eats, and what makes it unique.
Some weeks we'll work in two dimensions with pencils, ink, and paint. Other weeks we'll bring our creatures into three dimensions through sculpture and construction. By the end of the class, students will have created a collection of original creatures that could only have come from their imaginations.
