Watercolor Foundations

Adults 

Learn the fundamentals of watercolor and discover what makes this unpredictable medium so much fun to work with.

Watercolor Foundations is designed for adults withlittle to no watercolor experience who want to develop a better understanding of the medium and gain confidence using it. Whether you've taken Watercolor Without Fear, experimented with watercolor on your own, or are picking up a watercolor brush for the first time, you're welcome in this class.

Over seven weeks, we'll explore how water, paint, paper, and brushwork work together. Through demonstrations, exercises, and finished paintings, students will learn techniques they can continue using long after the class ends.

What You'll Explore

• Water & Paint Control: Learn how changing the amount of water and pigment affects everything that happens on the paper.
• Washes & Gradients: Practice flat and graduated washes and learn how to create smooth transitions of color.
• Wet-on-Wet & Wet-on-Dry: Discover how timing and moisture can create either soft, flowing shapes or controlled edges and details.
• Layering & Glazing: Build depth and richer colors using transparent layers of paint.
• Color Mixing: Learn how to mix colors intentionally and avoid muddy results.
• Brushwork & Texture: Experiment with different marks, edges, textures, and ways of handling a brush.
• Planning a Painting: Learn when to control the watercolor—and when to let the paint and water do some of the work.

Each project is designed to introduce new skills while giving you room to experiment and make your own artistic decisions. The goal isn't for everyone to create the same painting. It's to understand watercolor well enough to begin developing your own approach to it.
